Abstract
570,600. Worm gearing. MICHIGAN TOOL CO. Sept. 3, 1943, No. 14430. Convention date, Sept. 4, 1942. [Class 80 (i)] Consists in means for facilitating the assembly of a worm of hour-glass shape in mesh with a worm-gear within a housing. A housing 10 encloses a worm-gear 12, keyed to a shaft 14, engaged by a worm 20 on a shaft 22. The housing has aligned apertures 16, 18 at right angles to the shaft 14. Ball bearings 24 are fitted on a reduced portion of the shaft 22 with one of the inner races abutting an annular shoulder on the shaft, the bearings being held in position by a nut 26. The other end of the shaft also carries a ball bearing 28 secured by a nut 30. The worm, together with the ball bearings, is assembled outside the housing to a bearing retainer 32 which has a central aperture 34 therethrough terminating in a flange 36 against which the outer races of the ball bearings 24 are pressed by an annular flange on an end retainer 38. A seal 42 prevents leakage of oil. Retainer 32 has an annular axial portion 44, Figs. 2, 4, a part of which is relieved over 180 degrees. The sub-assembly is inserted through aperture 16 with the relieved portion 46 directed downwardly so as to keep the worm clear of the teeth of the gear 12, Fig. 2. The whole is then moved forward so that the unrelieved part of surface 44 is within the aperture 16. An end bearing cap 54 is then inserted in aperture 18 and secured by bolts 58 after which the bearing retainer 32 is rotated through 180 degrees to bring the unrelieved portion 44 to the bottom of aperture 16 as in Fig. 1 to take the thrust.
