Abstract

1,087,479. Surgical irrigation apparatus. A. TOUCHBERRY. Nov. 23, 1965 [Dec. 4, 1964], No. 49772/65. Heading A5R. Colonic irrigation apparatus comprises a fixed standpipe 36 through which irrigation liquid from a reservoir 12 is circulated by a pump 28, the standpipe being connected to the patient through a liquid seal, in the form of a U-shaped passage comprising the lower end of the standpipe and conduits 60, 64, and a flexible tube 72. Two different liquids are maintained at constant temperature by heating means (not shown) in separate compartments 16, 18 of the reservoir 12. The reservoir is connected through three-way cocks 22, 50 at its top and bottom with the standpipe 36. The cocks 22, 50 are operated together so that liquid from either compartment is circulated through the standpipe 36. A flow-regulating valve 62 and a check valve 66 are located in the conduit 60, 64 through which liquid is supplied to the patient. The lower end of the standpipe 36 surrounds one end of an upwardly directed conduit 34 interconnecting the reservoir and the standpipe. The U-shaped passage is located below the level of the patient so that if the circulation of liquid ceases, and the liquid level in the standpipe falls while the nozzle is in the patient, a liquid seal is formed.
