Abstract

933,536. Parenteral injection apparatus. ABBOTT LABORATORIES. Oct. 26, 1961 [Nov. 10, 1960], No. 38416/61. Class 81 (2). Parenteral liquid injection apparatus comprises two flexible liquid containers having their outlets connected through valve means located in the bottom of one of them and so arranged that the flow of liquid from one container prevents the flow from the other. The equipment is applicable to the injection of two solutions in sequence as from containers 51, 52, Fig. 1, in which no flow from container 51 can take place until the supply from container 52 is finished or interrupted by a tube clip 56. The supply tube 59 carries a perforating member 66, Fig. 7, which is passed through the wall of the container 51 into a U- shaped tubular member 55 having an outlet 65 for connection to the tube 57. It encloses a ball 71 which may be seated against either end aperture 70, 68 to close it. When a flow is received through the tubing 59 the greater hydrostatic head in the associated con - tainer 52, Fig. 1, causes the ball 71, Fig. 7, to close the port 70 to prevent passage of the contents of container 51 while the incoming liquid passes to tubing 57 and thence to the patient. When the flow from the first container ceases or is interrupted the liquid in container 51 forces the ball 71 against port 68, to prevent communication with the tube 59, and flows to the patient through tube 57. Other forms of valve device incorporating a float valve, a flap valve or a capillary passage are also described. In the latter case the passage extends between the two inlets and introduces sufficient resistance to flow to prevent communication as long as there is approximately the same head of liquid in the two containers. When the first container is empty, however, liquid flows through the passage from the second container to the patient.
