Abstract

An electroluminescent screen is made using a molybdenum or tantalum foil as a support on an electrode by embedding the foil in activated zinc sulphide with an added halide (e.g. NaCl), and heating to 600-1050 DEG C. to produce a film of zinc sulphide on the surface of the foil. Activators mentioned are copper, zinc and manganese, and most of the phosphors described are stated to emit general low A.C. frequencies changing to blue at 1000 c.p.s. Manganese activated foils are stated to be D.C. electroluminescent. Molybdenum foil with included zinc sulphide layer can be mounted with a sheet of conducting glass, a sheet of mica and a contact layer of castor oil to form an electroluminescent cell.
