Abstract

1 - (5 - Nitro - 2 - furyl) - 2 - (2 - amino - 6-pyridyl)-ethylene, its N-acetyl derivative and 1 - (5 - nitro - 2 - furyl) - 2 - (6 - hydroxy -2-pyridyl)-ethylene are prepared by heating 2-[2-(5 -nitro - 2 - furyl) - vinyl] - pyridine - 6-carboxylic acid azide in a solvent to give 1-(5-nitro -2 - furyl) - 2 - (2 - amino - 6 - pyridyl)-ethylene or, if acetic anhydride or glacial acetic acid or a mixture thereof is used as the solvent, to give the corresponding N-acetyl compound, if desired, saponifying the N-acetyl compound to give the free amine and, if desired, diazotizing the amine and boiling the diazo compound to give 1 - (5 - nitro - 2 - furyl) - 2 - (6 -hydroxy-2-pyridyl)-ethylene. 2 - [2 - (5 - Nitro - 2 - furyl) - vinyl] - pyridine-6-carboxylic acid azide is prepared by reacting 5-nitrofurfural with methyl 2-methyl-pyridine-6-carboxylate to obtain 1-(5-nitro-2-furyl)-2-(6-carbomethoxy -2 - pyridyl) - ethylene, saponifying this compound to obtain the corresponding free carboxylic acid, treating this compound with thionyl chloride to obtain the corresponding acid chloride, and heating this compound with sodium azide.
