Abstract
The invention relates to merocyanine dyes of the formula <FORM:1093444/C4-C5/1> wherein Y is O or S, X is O, S or >NH-R or-CONHR- in which R represents an alkyl radical or a phenyl, naphthyl or phenylalkyl group, Z is H or an acyl group, e.g. an acetyl group, A is a substituent which may be present in the 5 or 6-position of the benzene ring, and which is halogen, an alkyl group, or a phenyl, phenylalkyl or alkoxy group of up to 5C, or a hydroxy, carboxyl, esterified carboxyl or heterocyclic group, e.g. thienyl or furyl or a benzene ring annelated in the 5,6-position and B represents a cation, e.g. an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium cation.ALSO:A compound of formula <FORM:1093444/C2/1> is prepared by reacting 3-chloro-2-hydroxy-propane-1 -sulphonic acid with 2-methyl benzoxazole to form a compound of formula <FORM:1093444/C2/2> and reacting the product with diphenyl formamidine in acetic anhydride.
