Abstract
A cellulose organic ester or nitrate for making photographic film base is rendered fluorescent in ultra-violet light by adding thereto from 0.0005 to 0.003 per cent by weight of a compound of the formula <FORM:0816026/IV (a)/1> wherein R, R1 and R11 are substituted or unsubstituted aromatic groups, R being attached directly to the ring and at least one of R1 and R11 being joined to the ring by a -(CH=CH-)n group (where n is 1 or 2), and at least one of R, R1 and R11 being a heterocyclic group which may or may not be joined to the ring by a -(CH=CH-)n group. Compounds specified are 1 - (2 - benzothiazolyl) - 3 - styryl - 5 - phenyl pyrazoline, 1 - (2 - benzothiazolyl) - 3 - furovinyl - 5 - furyl pyrazoline, 1 - phenyl - 3 - cinnamal - methyl - 5 - furyl pyrazoline, 1 - (2 - benzothiazolyl) - 3 - p - chlorophenyl - 5 - styryl pyrazoline and 1-(2-benzothiazolyl)-3-cinnamal-methyl-5-styryl pyrazoline. The cellulose ester may be the acetate.ALSO:1-(2-Benzothiazolyl)-3-styryl-5-phenyl pyrazoline is prepared by heating dibenzal-acetone and 2-benzothiazolylhydrazine with sodium ethoxide on the water bath. By using difurfural-acetone, cinnamal - p - chloroacetophenone or dicinnamal-acetone in place of dibenzal-acetone, the corresponding 3 - furovinyl - 5 - furyl-, 3 - p - chlorophenyl - 5 - styryl-, and 3 - cinnamal - methyl - 5 - styryl- 1 - (2 - benzothiazolyl) pyrazolines are obtained.
