Abstract

The invention comprises the following colour couplers:- (a) a -thiocyano-acyloacetanilides; (b) N - substituted - a - thiocyano -acyloacetamides; (c) 4-thiocyano - 5 - pyrazolones unsubstituted in the 2-position but having substituents in the 1- and 3-positions; (d) 4-thiocyano-5-pyrazolones having a phenyl or substituted phenyl group in the 1-position and an alkyl, amino, substituted amino or acylamino group in the 3-position; (e) 4-thiocyanophenols having an alkyl, amino or substituted amino group in the 2-position; and (f) 4-thiocyanonaphthols having an alkyl, amino or substituted amino group in the 2-position. The above colour couplers are prepared by reacting corresponding compounds in which thiocyano is replaced by hydrogen with thiocyanogen as it is formed or in solution in an organic solvent. Specified colour couplers are a -benzoyl-a -thiocyano-acetanilide, a -benzoyl-a -thiocyanoacet-3 5-dicarboxyanilide, 1-(2, 4, 6-trichlorophenyl)-3-n-pentadecyl-4-thiocyano - 5-pyrazolone, 1-(2, 4, 6-trichlorophenyl)-3-[3-(2, 4-di-tert-amyl-phenoxyacetamido) benzamido]-4-thiocyano-5-pyrazolone, 1-(para-tert.-butylphenoxy-phenyl)-3-a -(para-tert.-butylphenoxy) - propionamido-4-thiocyano-5-pyrazolone and 1-hydroxy-4-thiocyano-N-[d -(2, 4-di-tert.-amylphenoxy)-n-butyl]-2-naphthamide, the detailed preparation of which is described. a -Benzoylacet-3, 5-dicarbomethoxyanilide is prepared from ethyl benzoylacetate, sodium acetate and dimethyl-5-aminoisophthalate, and may be hydrolysed with alcoholic KOH to give a -benzoylacet-3,5-dicarboxyanilide.
