Abstract

<PICT:0620514/IV (c)/1> Methine dyes are prepared by reacting together an aromatic amine or a cyclic amine such as piperidine with a compound of the formula shown in Fig. II, wherein P is an organic group (which when present in the compound P-CH2-CO-Q activates the CH2 group) such as CN, COOH, carbalkoxy, or acyl, Q is an organic group (which when present in the compound P-CH2-CO-Q activates the CH2 group) such as acyl, aryl, alkylamino, arylamino, hydroxy, alkoxy, carboxy, and carbalkoxy, or P and Q together represent the non-metallic atoms necessary for completing a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic nucleus. Dyes are prepared from: (1) ethyl furfurylidene acetoacetate and anthranilic acid; (2) 4-furfurylidene-1-phenyl-3methyl-5-pyrazolone and aniline or N-methylaniline; and (3) furfurylidene-cyanacetanilide and piperidine.
