Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A cylinder (21) (Fig. 2, not shown) drawing a tape (27) carrying pins through a machine for pinning tags to articles is driven through a friction torque-limiting device and springs which store energy when feed of the tape is stopped. The drive includes a friction connection from an intermittently driven driving shaft (8) (Figs. 5 and 7, not shown) to a helical spring (19) connected to spiral spring (22) which drives the roller (21) frictionally from inside. By this means, each time an operation of the machine is initiated manually, the tape is drawn by the roller (21) until the next pin to be inserted engages a stop (33). The drive then slips, while energy is stored in the springs to provide a drive when the tape is subsequently released. The pins and tape are clamped during motion of a ram (2) which drives a pin along a guide (33), by a guide (29) which is pressed by a spring (40) to clamp the pin strip against a fixed guide (31). The roller (21) co-operates with a presser roller (5) carried on a spring-biased arm (35).
