[Also in Division H3] The output of a transformer secondary winding S is varied by means of a control winding K which when energized produces saturation in a shunt limb or limbs LN, MO to ensure maximum coupling between primary winding P and S and when de-energized or short-circuited allows the primary flux to by-pass the secondary S. The cross-sectional areas of at least the yoke parts LM, NO may be twice that of control limb EF and four times those of shunt limbs LN, MO. In another arrangement (Fig. 4, not shown), only one shunt limb is provided. The control current may be D.C., A.C. or pulsed in synchronism with the primary current.
