Abstract

A process for the manufacture of hydrocarbon fuels having a high heating value comprises (1) destructively hydrogenating a petroleum wax over a catalyst containing a hydrogenation-dehydrogenation component supported on a solid acid-acting refractory oxide support to convert at least 30% weight of the wax per pass to hydrocarbons boiling below 288 DEG C.; and (2) fractionating the product of step (1) to separate therefrom a fraction boiling between 149 DEG C. and 316 DEG C. and having a heating value of at least 10,500 kcal/kg. Hydrogenation conditions may be 260 DEG to 482 DEG C. 35 to 140 atmospheres 0.25 to 5 v/v/hour Hydrogen/feed mole ratio 5:1 to 50:1 The catalyst may be iron, nickel, cobalt or platinum or oxides or sulphides thereof or oxides or sulphides of molybdenum, tungsten or chromium, or mixtures of these, on silica and/or alumina, montmorillonitic clay, silica-magnesia or a molecular sieve, plus fluorine or chlorine. The wax feed may be distillate or residual, macrocrystalline or microcrystalline, and may contain up to 30% by weight of oil.
