Abstract

Hydrocracking of C10 or higher n-paraffin hydrocarbons e.g. cetane, is effected with hydrogen at 400-800 DEG F. in the substantial absence of sulphur with an elemental Group VIII metal catalyst on a refractory support, and a normally-liquid product is recovered. Substantial absence of sulphur is defined as less than 500 p.p.m. by weight, sulphur-containing feedstocks therefore requiring preliminary desulphurization. The feed may be a single n-paraffin or a mixture from the higher petroleum fractions which may contain up to 10% by weight non-n-paraffin hydrocarbons. The catalyst may contain 5-75% wt. iron group metal, e.g. Ni, Co or 0.01-5% wt. platinum group metal, e.g. Pt, Pd on an inactive or active support such as MgO2, CaCO3, SiO2, pumice firebrick, sepiolite or kieselguhr (the former) or g -Al2O3, SiO-Al2O3, SiO2-MgO2 and zeolites containing 0.1-15% wt. combined chlorine or fluorine (the latter). Cracking pressure is 0-2,000 p.s.i.g. Catalysts exemplified are nickel on (i) sepiolite, (ii) silica-alumina.
