Abstract
1326946 Refining mineral oils; transformer oils SUN OIL CO 14 Aug 1970 [18 Aug 1969] 39235/70 Headings C5E and C5F An electrical insulating oil comprises a severely hydrorefined naphthenic oil (e.g. 98- 70 parts by weight) and an unhydrorefined naphthenic distillate (e.g. 2-30 parts). The blend suitably has a viscosity of 40-200 SUS at 100‹ F. and contains 20-30 wt. per cent aromatic hydrocarbons; it can contain a cycle oil, from the catalytic cracking of gas oil boiling in the range 600-1000‹ F. with azeolitic catalyst and comprising polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, and 2,6-di-tertiary butyl p-cresol as an oxidation inhibitor. Either the blend or the individual components thereof can be further refined will attapulgite. The hydrorefined naphthenic oil is obtained by hydrorefining a naphthenic distillate at above 500 with 800- 3000 psi partial pressure of hydrogen and a LHSV of 0.1-8 using a catalyst containing Mo, Co, Ni and/or W oxide on silica, alumina, alumina-titania, or aluminosilicate and which can be presulphided. The hydrorefined naphthenic oil can be further hydrorefined to convert tetracyclic and higher naphthenes and 1, 2 and 3 aromatic ring compounds to tetracyclic and higher aromatic compounds; this further refining is carried out at about 675‹ F. with a hydrogen pressure below 1600 psi using a catalyst similar to that used for the first hydrorefining or of Pt, Ru or Pd on alumina or of nickel on silica. The hydrorefined oil component of the blend can be a blend of 15-85 vol per cent of severely hydrorefined naphthenic distillate having a 335 UVA of less than 0.04 with 85-15 vol per cent of an oil which has been severely hydrorefined under conditions favouring aromatization, e.g. 725-800‹ F., and has a 335 UVA of 0.6 to 1.2.
