Abstract

1,084,615. Abrading. KINGS HEATH ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Aug. 25, 1966 [Sept. 7, 1965], No. 38096/65. Heading B3D. An abrading machine comprises an endless flexible belt 28 having a pair of runs extending between a pulley driven by an electric motor or like prime mover and a bearing 24 the distance of which from the axis of rotation of the pulley can be varied for adjusting the tension of the belt, the bearing including means for floatingly supporting the belt on a cushion of air. The bearing 24 has a lower flat surface for location in a head 10 carried at the upper end of a tube 12 which telescopically fits into an outer tube 14 and is urged outwardly by a compressed air piston- and-cylinder, spring or lever system to tension the belt. An air inlet 16 communicates with the inner tube which is closed at its lower end and is connected at its upper end through a pipe 20 to a passage 22 in the bearing, the passage 22 being connected through a bore 30 with the space between the belt 28 and bearing 22 to floatingly support the belt which is prevented from moving axially by spaced guides 26. The outer tube 14 is secured to a guide plate located relative to the driving pulley.
