Claims. -.(Cl. 515-135) Ourinvention relates tobelt sanders, andincluded in "the objects of our invention are:

Figure 5 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view through 55 of Figure 1 with the drive motor omitted. Our belt sander is adapted to be mounted directly upon an electric motor 1 so that the electric motor not only forms a drive means for the sander, but also a support therefor. Virtually any electric motor having a rating from one-sixth to a one-half horsepower orv greater may be used.
Our belt sander includes a channel member 2 adapted to rest on top of the electric motor and be secured thereto by four rods 3 which are secured in the flanges of the channel member and terminate in lugs which receive the ends of a'pair of U-bolts 4 extended around the motor l adjacent its ends. A series of holes may be provided in the flanges of the channel member so that the channel member may be secured to various sizes and styles of electric motors.
One end of the channel member 2 is provided with a boss 5 having a horizontal bore which receives the horizontal end 6 of a post 7. Awork table 19 is mounted inlfro'ntof the belt18 and is provided with 'a notch or slot 20 which receives theforwardreach ofthe belt 18. Themountin'g table is provided with a pair of mounting lugs 21, either one of which may be disposed so as to overlie one side of the boss 5 and be secured thereto by a screw 22.
Each mountin'glug 21 is slotted so that the worktable may be adjusted between a horizontal position and an angular position as indicated by dotted lines in Figure 5.
It will be observedjthatfthe plane'passing through the axes of the idler pulley and'dr'ive pulley are substantially centered with respect to the channel member 2. The post 7 may be'inserted'in either directioninto the boss 5- and theworktable may be secured by one lug orthe other to either end of the boss. By this arrangement-of theparts the belt sander may be arranged so as to'be driven by either a clockwise rotating ora counterclockwise rotating imotor shaft.
In order that the worktable maybe interchanged and the post 7 securely fastened, three set screwopenings are provided in the boss'S. Either end set screw openingmay accommodate the set screw 22. .The other two openings may receive set screws '23 which secure the post 7.
It is desirable for some sanding operations-to provide a backing member disposed .behind the operating reach ofthe beltsander. For thispurposea backing member 24 is provided which is in' the form-of anL-shaped plate having a verticallleg located behindthe operating'reach'of v thebelt within the slot. 20 of the worktable and a horizontal'l'eg which is secured to a flange of the channel mem- 'It'will'be observed that while the member 18' is referred to as a belt sander, other cutting or abrading tools in directed lugs which are joined by a connecting bar 11.
Slidably mounted on the post between the collars 10 belt form may be carried by the pulleys.
It also will be observed that by reason of the arrangement of the collars 10, various lengths of belts may be accommodated and that the spring 13 may be arranged to apply the desired tension.
Having fully described our invention, it is to be understood that we do not wish to be limited to the details herein set forth, but our invention is of the full scope of the appended claims.
We claim:
1. A belt driving mechanism, comprising: a channelshaped base member adapted to be mounted on the case of an electric motor; fastening means encircling the case of the motor for rigidly securing said base member thereon; said base member having a bored boss across one end in a plane traversing the shaft of said motor; a post having a horizontal end fitting said boss, said post extending rearwardly from said boss, then curving upwardly and forwardly and then extending vertically; said post defining a plane perpendicular to and traversing said base member, an idler pulley supported from the vertical portion of said post; a drive pulley adapted to mount on the shaft of said electric motor; a belt device connecting said pulleys; a work table tiltably supported from said base member and disposed forwardly of the forward reach of said belt device; and a backing member supported from said base member and disposed behind the forward reach of said belt device in the vicinity of said table.
2. A belt driving mechanism, comprising: a channelshaped base member adapted to be mounted on the case of an electric motor; fastening means encircling the case of the motor for rigidly securing said base member thereon; said base member having a bored boss across one end 1 in a plane traversing the shaft of said motor; a post having a horizontal end fitting said boss, said post extending rearwardly from said boss, then curving upwardly and forwardly and then extending vertically; said post defining a plane perpendicular to and traversing said base member, a bracket slidably mounted on the vertical portion of said post; a spring urging said bracket upwardly on said post; a guide bar adjustably mounted at one side of said post and restraining said bracket against rotation about the axis of said post; an idler pulley carried by said bracket; a drive pulley adapted to mount on the shaft of said electric motor; and a belt device connecting said pulleys.
3. A belt driving mechanism, comprising: a channelshaped base member adapted to be mounted on the case of an electric motor; fastening means encircling the case of the motor for rigidly securing said base member thereon; said base member having a bored boss across one end in a plane traversing the shaft of said motor; a post having a horizontal end fitting said boss, said post extending rearwardly from said boss, then curving upwardly and forwardly and then extending vertically; said post defining a plane perpendicular to and traversing said base member, a bracket slidably mounted on the vertical portion of said post; a spring urging said bracket upwardly on said post; a guide bar adjustably mounted at one side of said post and restraining said bracket against rotation about the axis of said post; an idler pulley carried by said bracket; a drive pulley adapted to mount on the shaft of said electric motor; a belt device connecting said pulleys; and a work table tiltably supported from said base member and disposed forwardly of the forward reach of said belt device.
4. A belt driving mechanism, comprising: a channelshaped base member adapted to be mounted on the case of an electric motor; fastening means encircling the case of the motor for rigidly securing said base member thereon; said base member having a bored boss across one end in a plane traversing the shaft of said motor; a post having a horizontal end fitting said boss, said post extending rearwardly from said boss, then curving upwardly and forwardly and then extending vertically; said post defining a plane perpendicular to and traversing said base member, a bracket slidably mounted on the vertical portion of said post; a spring urging said bracket upwardly on said post; a guide bar adjustably mounted at one side of said post and restraining said bracket against rotation about the axis of said post; an idler pulley carried by said bracket; a drive pulley adapted to mount on the shaft of said electric motor; a belt device connecting said pulleys; a work table tiltably supported from said base member and disposed forwardly of the forward reach of said belt device; and a backing member supported from said base member and disposed behind the forward reach of said belt device in the vicinity of said table.
5. A belt driving mechanism adapted for installation on an electric motor wherein the motor case forms a mounting stand; a base member adapted to rest on the case of an electric motor and having an upper surface extending parallel with the axis of the motor shaft; straps extending from said base member and encircling said motor to secure said base member thereon; a boss at one end of said base member having a horizontal bore traversing said motor shaft; a post including a horizontal portion fitting the bore of said boss, said post extending rearwardly then forwardly and vertically to form an idler pulley support above said boss; an idler pulley mounted on said pulley support; a drive pulley mounted on said motor shaft; a belt extending between said pulleys forming a forward reach and a rearward reach, a belt backing bracket extending from said base member behind the forward reach of said belt; and a work table pivotally connected to said boss and disposed forwardly of said forward reach.
