Abstract

1,084,584. Infusion bags. SMITH & NEPHEW PLASTICS Ltd. April 25, 1966 [April 29, 1965], No. 18129/65. Headings B8C and B8K. [Also in Division B5] A thermoplastic net infusion bag, e.g. for tea, is made by folding a single sheet in half, heat sealing the two parallel open sides, introducing the tea, and sealing the open mouth of the bag, e.g. by high-frequency impulse sealing. Alternatively, a length of thermoplastic net may be folded along its longitudinal axis, and transverse seals formed to produce a number of joined open-mouthed bags. Preferably, no two bags have a common heat-sealed join. After filling, and heat sealing the bag mouths, the bags may be separated. Portions of tea may be placed in the net before forming the transverse seals. The bags may be left joined and packaged in a waterproof container. The net is produced by the biaxial stressing of a sheet of a thermoplastic material, e.g. high density polyethylene, having a regular pattern of embossments or depressions on at least one surface.
