Abstract

1395257 Pouches; packaging in bags TOWER PRODUCTS Inc 3 July 1972 [1 July 1971] 31028/72 Headings B8K and B8C A pouch for sterile articles formed at least partially of thermoplastics comprises two sheets 10, 12 welded together by seams 14, 16, and a cover 18 folded at 20 and sealed to the sheets 10, 12 and to itself along peelable seams 34, 30, 32. After insertion of the article the opening 37 of the pouch is closed by a seam (38), Fig. 5 (not shown). The overlapping portion 42 of the cover 18 forms a tab by manipulation of which the seams 34, 30, 32 can be delaminated to open the pouch. In modifications, the sheets 10, 12 may be replaced by a tube or by a single sheet which is folded longitudinally or transversely, the sides in the latter case being of unequal length and the cover being an unfolded sheet attached to the shorter side. The pouch may be of low or high density polyethylene or polyisobutylene-modified polyethylene and one of the sheets 10, 12 may be of spun-bonded non-woven polyolefin material which is pervious to sterilizing gases but impervious to bacteria. The inner surface of the cover 18 may be modified so that it forms a peelable seal by applying a thermoplastics resin or other thermal adhesive to the surface or by the application of heat and an oxidizing atmosphere to the surface during extrusion.
