Abstract
Formate esters are made by reacting an hydroxy organic compound with CO in the presence of an alkali or alkaline earth metal salt on quaternary NH4 salt and an olefin oxide. Preferred salts are carbonates, formates, acetates and benzoates. C2- 8 olefine oxides are preferred. Preferred hydroxy compounds are C1- 4 monohydric alcohols. Examples describe the conversion of methanol, ethanol, n-propanol and decan-1-ol to methyl, ethyl, n-propyl and decan-1-ol formates respectively.ALSO:Quaternary ammonium, alkali or alkaline earth metal salts in combination with an olefin oxide are used to convert organic hydroxy compounds to the corresponding formate esters in the presence of CO. The salts may be formates, acetates, benzoates or p carbonates. An alkali metal carbonate may be produced in situ from CO2, alkoxide (ex. EtOH + Na).
