Abstract

a -Fluoroacrylic esters of C4-7 alkanols are obtained by condensing the oxal fluoroacetic ester of the alkanol with formaldehyde and adding a weak alkali to decompose the a -oxo-b -fluoro-b -carboalkoxy -g - butyrolactone produced. In an example butyl oxalate is condensed with butyl fluoroacetate to produce butyl oxal fluoroacetate, which is condensed with trioxymethylene to form a -oxo-b -fluoro-b -carbobutoxy-g -butyrolactone; this is treated with potassium carbonate to give butyl a -fluoroacrylate.
