Abstract

7-Dehydrocholesterol is obtained by subjecting a solution of a 7-bromocholesteryl ester in an inert solvent to the action of gaseous ammonia or of an ammonium compound which splits off ammonia, e.g. ammonium carbonate, ammonium bicarbonate and ammonium carbamate, and saponifying the resulting 7-dehydrocholesteryl ester. The reaction mixture is saturated with ammonia or the ammonium compound prior to heating to an elevated temperature, e.g. 150 DEG C. The saponification is effected with a solution containing OH ions.
