Abstract

1 - Methyl - 6 - nitro - 4 - quinolone - 3 - carboxylic acid is prepared by methylating 4-hydroxy - 6 - nitroquinoline - 3 - carboxylic acid with a reactive ester of methanol (exemplified by methyl iodide or dimethyl sulphate) in an aqueous alkaline medium provided, for example, by sodium or potassium hydroxide or carbonate.
