4-Dimethylaminobenzalpyruvic acid is prepared by adding an aqueous methanol solution of potassium hydroxide to a mixture of p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde and pyruvic acid, adding methyl alcohol, diluting with water, and acidifying.
