Abstract

1,083,649 Cooling garments. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Aug. 3, 1965 [Sept. 4, 1964], No. 33042/65. Heading A3V. A cooling garment comprises a fabric layer supporting a plurality of cooling tubes in contact with the wearer's body, the arrangement of the tubes being such that their cooling effect in any area of the body is substantially proportional to the body mass in that area. The fabric is preferably net with the major axes of the meshes at an angle of 45 degrees to the major axes of the garment to allow a degree of two-way stretch. As shown, a one-piece suit comprises front and back portions laced at 31 along the outer edges of the torso, arms and legs, the latter having knitted cuffs 16 and zip fasteners 28 along their inner sides. A table gives the approximate bulk per region, e.g. arm, leg, right upper torso, of an average man on which distribution of the tubes is calculated, all the tubes 40a in a region (Fig. 5, not shown) being of the same length but arranged in differing serpentine paths. Main supply and return manifolds 32 and 34 respectively for the cooling liquid are arranged at the waist and are connected to a heat exchanger 58 and pump 76 (Fig. 4). Conduits 42, 44, 46, 48 lead to subsidiary supply manifolds 60, 62, 64, 66 at ankles and wrists and conduits 50, 52, 54, 56 lead to the main return manifold 34 from subsidiary return manifolds 68, 72, 74, 76 at the waist The method of sewing the tubes 40a to the inner face of the net is shown in Fig. 7.
