[Also in Division F2] Mixing A method and apparatus for mixing pulverulent and/or granular materials comprises a container 1 with a hopper shaped lower portion 2 intermittent pulses of compressed air being introduced through nozzles 9 which are directed upwardly and tangentially so that the material is circulated in an outer ascending vortex A and an inner descending vortex B. The nozzles 9 are preferably Laval nozzles whereby the air may be raised to supersonic speed; the material is allowed to settle at least to fluid state between pressure waves. There is a charging closure 33 and conical discharging closure 3 both pneumatically actuated. Compressed air is supplied by a pneumatic valve 33 to a ring manifold 5 and thence through removable filters 25 to the nozzles 9. Separating A centrifugal impeller 14 is operated during each pressure wave and allows air to escape into. the discharge pipe 11 while throwing solids back into the container; the impeller may comprise vertical vanes 19 (Fig. 1) or a plurality of spaced annular discs 19a (Fig. 6) between a disc 17 and an annular disc 18 with collar 20 projecting into the discharge pipe. There may be a vibrated filter 17a downstream of the impeller.
