A fuel composition comprises gasoline, a tetra-alkyl lead compound and 0.002-0.4 millimoles per gallon of gasoline of a metal selected from nickel, cobalt, tin, chromium, vanadium and copper in the form of a salt of a compound of formula <FORM:1082855/C4-C5/1> where R is a hydrocarbon radical of up to C30 and R1 is H or R. The fuel may also contain 0.05-0.6 theories of a compound of formula <FORM:1082855/C4-C5/2> where R and R1 are as above and n is 0 or 1 e.g. cresyl diphenyl phosphate.
