A bobbin spindle for yarn winding machines comprises a centering sleeve 4 and an exchangeable expandable pin 5, the centering sleeve 4 including a slide member 11 that serves to (a) couple the expandable pin 5 to the centering sleeve 4, (b) displace the expandable pin 5 to change its effective size. As shown the expandable pin 5 is formed from a plurality of tongues 16 terminating in radially extending segments 16a compressed together by an elastic ring 17; the ring 17 pressing the tongues 16 against a tapered tube 6 rigid with the centering sleeve 4. Each pin 5 includes a plurality of coupling pins 19 that can lock with bayonet-like engagement with key-hole type apertures in the slide member 11. When a winding cone or cylinder (not shown) is mounted on the spindle, one end is centered on a cone 10 or a centering disc 28 and the other end is centered by the ring 17 on the segments 16a. To release a winding cone or cylinder a handle 27 is operated to move a rod 12 in a manner moving the expandable pin 5 along the tube 6 such that the effective diameter of the ring 17 is reduced.
