A fabric inspection apparatus comprises a fabric supply roll 1, an illuminated opaque viewing screen 4 over which the fabric 2 passes from the roll 1, a wind-up roll 7 and a presser roll 11 to drive the roll 7 by frictional contact therewith, the roll 11 being mounted on a member 14 pivotable about a fixed horizontal axis 13 so as to allow movement of the roll 11 away from the axis of the roll 7 as the bulk of the fabric thereon increases. The rolls 1, 7 are mounted on supports (not shown) of known construction. The fabric 2 passes from the roll 1 around driven take-off rolls 3, over the inspection screen 4 illuminated from the rear by a light source (not shown) and over a roll 5 which ensures that the fabric 2 is maintained flat as it passes over the screen 4. The fabric then passes to the freely-rotatable roll 7 by way of guide means 6 including selvedge-uncurling devices 8, guide rolls 9 and a scroll roll 10 arranged to rotate so as to tend to oppose the advance of the fabric 2. The roll 11 is driven through a belt-and-pulley system 12 from the shaft 13. The member 14 comprises an L-shaped arm pivotable about the axis of the shaft 13 and is formed with a quadrant-shaped curved portion the centre of curvature of which coincides with the axis of the shaft 13. Attached to one extreme of this curved portion is an inextensible flexible suspension 15 for a stack of weights 16 so that the total force exerted on the surface of the fabric during wind-up is constant for given weights 16. The curved portion may have a groove formed therein or may be provided with teeth and the suspension 15 is a pulley cable or a chain, respectively.
