A film 9 is fed into a bath section 1 of a sprocketless film developing machine, the section containing various tanks holding various processing liquids, and thence moves round an adjustable tension roller 10, up and down several times between shafts (25), (26) Fig. 3 (not shown) (the first loop take-up device) extending across the width of a drying cabinet 2, through the cabinet up and down several times between shafts 75, 60 (the second loop take-up device), and between pressure rollers 65, 66 to the film winding drum 67. The diameter of the tension roller 10 can be altered by adjusting the periphery of an elastic insert ring (19) (Fig. 3) gripped between other parts (11), (12) of the roller (10), which is synchronously driven by the drive mechanism of section 1. The first loop take-up device is mounted in a slide 29 which is thus suspended by the film. As the slide moves up and down, it causes a rack (33) (Fig. 3) to move, rotating a gear (34) which controls a variable transformer which in turn energizes the drive motor (37) (Fig. 2) of the cabinet (2). The second loop takeup device is similar to the first, and varies a transformer 63 which in turn varies the voltage applied to a motor (64) (Fig. 2) which drives the drum 67. The upper film shafts of the cabinet are resiliently mounted in slide blocks to allow any film in the cabinet to shrink without showing strain marks even when the machine is not running.
