Abstract

In a diaphragm valve, as shown, the crosssectional area for flow in the region of the seat or weir 28, in fully open position, is considerably less than the cross-sectional area of the inlet and outlet passages 12. This is said to give an improved opening/flow characteristic tending toward the exponential or " equal per cent " form (134), Fig. 11 (not shown). In a second embodiment, Figs. 6 to 10 (not shown), the diaphragm opening of the valve body in the plane 24 is of hour-glass shape, the narrow dimension (50) corresponding to the seat. The diaphragm (100) is provided with twin bulges (102) on opposite sides of the seat or weir (90) whereby full flow right up to the seat is permitted. In a third embodiment, Figs. 12 to 15 (not shown), the small cross-sectional area of the flow passage at the seat is located near the level of the pipe axis by reducing the height of the weir or seat and forming the diaphragm opening of the body by steeply sloped faces (9) in V-shape. At the bottom of the V these join to transverse flat wing flanges to which the valve bonnet is bolted.
