[Also in Division F4] A flameproof lamp fitting comprises a transparent or translucent guard tube 2 closed at one end 4 and mounted at the other end in a contact block, and a tubular lamp 22 extending within the guard tube between contacts on the contact block and contacts on a contact plate 24 disposed in the closed end of the guard tube, biasing means being arranged to act on the contact block or on the lamp to urge them bodily towards the closed end of the guard tube so that, in the event of the lamp or guard tube being smashed, the resulting movement breaks the electric circuit to the lamp. The contact block comprises a fixed part 28 secured to a housing portion 12 and a movable part 34 having a tapering inner surface 36 adapted to be a very loose fit in a correspondingly tapered recess in the part 28. Sockets 38 are provided in the part 34 to receive pins 40 on the end of the lamp, and plungers 43 in the part 28 are urged by springs 44 towards the sockets 38 and act as the electrical connections between the sockets and spring contacts 45 joined by terminals 30 to input leads (not shown). The contact plate 24 may be urged towards the lamp by a spring 50 of sufficient strength to overcome the force of the springs 44, and the leads 42 from the contact plate are also connected to spring-loaded plungers 43 (not shown) in the contact block. If the lamp or guard tube is smashed the springs 44 urge the plungers and the part 34 towards the right and electrical connection between the plungers and the contacts 45 is broken. The housing portion 12 is screwed into a fixed housing portion 16 and may swivel relative thereto within limits imposed by a stop 20.
