Abstract
Multi-coloured particulate detergent products are prepared by continuously spraying uncoloured detergent fluid through a plurality of spaced nozzles into a spray-drying tower while concurrently spraying coloured detergent <PICT:1080098/C4-C5/1> fluid into the tower through at least one other nozzle. In Fig. 1, hot uncoloured detergent liquid from crutcher 19 is drawn through pipes 21 and 23 by a pump 22 into an annular manifold 12 mounted outside a spray-drying tower wall 11. From the manifold equally spaced radially projecting nozzles 13-16, fitted with spray-heads 18, extend into the tower and serve to spray the uncoloured liquid entering manifold 12 into the tower. The fifth nozzle 17 is separately supplied with hot coloured liquid from crutcher 24, in which uncoloured liquid fed by gravity from crutcher 19 is coloured by colour solution entering from reservoir 29. The ratio of coloured to uncoloured liquid fed into the tower is controlled by a valve 33 which is periodically opened and closed by a timer 34. In Fig. 2 (not shown), there is illustrated an arrangement in which all five nozzles are connected to the manifold and thus receive uncoloured liquid, but one of them also receives colouring material at a point between the sprayhead and the manifold.
