In a vehicle lighting system the dipped headlamps are dimmed without power loss by chopping the current with an arrangement comprising a transistor multivibrator or other semi-conductor or thermionic valve arrangement, the frequency being high enough to avoid flicker. The arrangement may be applied, under the control of a photo-conductive cell, to reduce the illumination at night from vehicle signalling lamps.
