A vehicle door latch comprises a rotary latch member 2 and a striker, and a retention pin 20 and spring-loaded wedge 25 for interengagement on door closure in a manner which provides combined vertical and fore-and-aft restrain for a door with which the latch is used. As shown, the latch member 2 which is pivoted on a back plate 1, is engageable with a keeper pin 13 on a keeper back plate 12. The latch member 2 is partially shrouded by a cover plate 14 and is controlled by a spring loaded pawl 5, one arm 6 of which is engageable with a tooth 8, 9 or 10 on the latch member, and another arm 7 of which is engageable with a contactor arm 34 of a contactor lever 29 which is operable by an outside push button (not shown), and by an internal release linkage through a lever (39), Fig. 3 (not shown). Movement of the contactor may be blocked by an internal locking lever (44) connected to an internal locking member by a key-operated lock, through a shaft 48. A plate 19 connected between the keeper pin 13 and a flange 20 of the keeper back plate forms an anti-burst plate. The pin 22 is fixed to the flange 20 and is engageable with the wedge 25 which is mounted between the back and cover plates of the latch such that on door closure engagement of the pin 22 with inclined faces of the wedge, provide both vertical and fore- and-aft restraint for the door.
