Door control mechanism for use between a door frame and a vehicle door comprises a latch device having a latch member 16 which is received in a recess in a keeper 17, a tooth 16a of the latch member being received by a locking pocket 44 such that in the latched position the centre line of the pocket passes through the axis of rotation of the latch member. The keeper contains an insert member 31 which contains the pocket 44, and a spring loaded wedge block 46 mounted on a pin 47. The latch member 16 is mounted on a pivot shaft 58 which has as many apices as as there are teeth on the member, a ratchet wheel 60 which has twice the number of teeth as the latch member being mounted on the same shaft. A plastic wheel member 60b is mounted on the ratchet wheel so that portions 60c project into the spaces between the teeth to act as sound deadeners when in contact with a detent 81. The latch is released by rotating a detent actuating lever 83 about its pivot 77 thereby rotating detent lever 81 by means of a lug 80, the release being effected either by a pushbutton 88 acting on a flange 86 of lever 83 or by inside operating means through lever 95 (Fig. 3) and portion 99 of lever 83. The locking lever 91 must first be moved from its locked position as shown, by means of lever 95 or key actuated cam lever 93, both of which cause clockwise rotation of lever 91 about its pivot 92, a spring 112 urging the lever 91 to one of its two rest positions. On closing the automobile door the latch is automatically put in an unlatched position by means of a kick out portion 81 on the detent, this portion being lifted, due to co-operation with cam edge 113 of slot 115 in the lever, to cause locking lever 91 to rotate.
