Abstract

1,203,153. Latch fastenings. ARN KIEKERT SOHNE. 29 Aug., 1968, No. 41205/68. Heading E2A. A motor vehicle door latch comprising a part which acts to cause release of a latch bolt 9 which part is mounted, in use, to move transversely to the door or to have a component of transverse movement, the latch comprising a mass 24 pivotally mounted therein and, in use, having a component of movement transverse to the door against the action of a spring 25, when under the influence of a transverse acceleration of the vehicle of sufficient magnitude and tending to cause said part to release the latch bolt, the mass blocking movement of said part of the latch to releasing position. In the construction shown there are two such parts 15 and 18; the part 18 is a press button which is movable in the direction R transversely of the door against the bias of a spring 19 and this acts on the part 15 to pivot the part against the bias of a spring 21 so that it has a component of movement in the direction Q the part 15 pivoting to engage a detent 11 and to move the detent against the bias of a spring 13 to release the bolt 9. A transverse acceleration in the direction of the arrow P will cause a transverse movement of the press button 18 and pivoting of the part 15 so that it has a component of movement in the transverse direction so that the pressbutton and the part 15 tend to pivot the detent 11 to release the latch bolt so that subsequent deceleration would cause the door to open; under such acceleration however the mass 24 pivots so that it has a component of movement in the direction T which causes a projection 26 of the mass to move into a blocking position in front of a nose 29 of the part 15 to prevent movement of the part 15 and hence of the press button. The latch bolt shown has two teeth which are engageable in respective recesses of a keeper in safety latching and full latching positions respectively the latch bolt also has two teeth which are engageable by the detent 11 respectively in the safety latching and full latching positions. In a modified construction the mass is pivoted to the detent instead of being pivoted to the frame 2 but acts in a similar way but in addition the part 15 is modified so that it has a pin and slot connection with the pivot pin 14 so that it can both slide and pivot and also a connection with a locking lever which is connected by linkage to a knob which is mounted internally in the vehicle in use and which can pivot the locking lever between two positions in one of which the part 15 is slid downwardly so that it can no longer pivot the detent 11 to release the latch bolt. The locking lever carries a hook and the disposition of the teeth on the latch bolt engaged by the detent 11 is such that if the latch bolt is in the safety latching position the detent 11 is held in a position in which the mass 24 prevents movement of the locking lever to the locking position; this occurs because the locking lever has a hook which in such case engages over a projection of the mass so that it cannot be pivoted.
