Abstract

1,212,467. Latches. ARN KIEKERT SOHNE. 27 March, 1969 [29 March, 1968], No. 16056/69. Heading E2A. A vehicle door latch comprises a striker attachable to the door post and provided with a plurality of teeth and two spring loaded latch bolts 5, 6 are pivoted on a support 1, and each having two detents 13, 14 and 15, 16 at the outer sides thereof, one detent of each latch bolt engaging a respective tooth of the striker in the safety latching position and both detents each engaging a respective tooth of the striker in the full latching position. In the construction shown each of the detents is of sawtooth shape and the striker teeth are corresponding shaped and are provided by strips 19, 20 of the striker which are carried by a plate 21 of the striker. The plate 21 overlaps the two latch bolts to prevent the bolts separating from the striker in the event of a crash. The support 1 carries a reinforcing plate 2 which receives the pivot pins 3, 4 by which the latch bolts 5, 6 are mounted the pins passing through the plate 2 and through the support to be received in bushes 7, 8 of the rear face of the support. The pivot end portions of the latch bolts 5 and 6 are arranged so close to each other that they will engage and support each other if the pivot pins 3 and 4 should distort. Each of the latch bolts is provided with a lateral pin 9, 10, the pins extending through arcuate slots 11 and 12 in the support 1 and on the opposite side of the bracket carrying rollers 27 and 28; the rollers are engaged by a corresponding pair of oblique faces 29 and 30 of a slide 31 which is mounted on pins 34 and 35 which extend from the support 1 and pass through slots 32 and 33 in the slide. Movement of the slide to the right as shown in Fig. 4 causes the pins to be moved towards each other and this disengages the latch bolts from the striker. The latch bolts are biassed by a common spring 25. The slide 31 is moved by a two armed actuating lever 36 which is pivoted on the pin 34 and the bottom arm of which is urged to the left by a spring 37. The bottom arm engages a lug 38 of the slide 31 and counterclockwise movement of the lever moves the slide to the right to disengage the latch bolts. The upper arm of the actuating lever terminates in a hook 41 which in use is engaged by the end portion 42 of a spring biassed lever handle 43 Fig. 5 pivotally carried by a fixed door handle 45; by pivoting the lever handle 43 the hook 41 is moved to the left as shown in Fig. 4; the fixed handle 45 carries a cylinder lock mechanism 46 which operates on an eccentrically disposed lug 47 protruding into a slot 48 into the hook 41; when the lug 47 is rotated by the cylinder lock mechanism the lever 36 is shifted substantially vertically and the lower arm moves out of engagement with the lug 38 of the slide so that movement of the lever 36 by the handle 43 is then effective to release the latch bolts. The latch bolts are released from the inside of the door by an internal door operating mechanism which comprises a rod (not shown) pivotally connected to a lever 60; the lever 60 has a slot 59 which is engaged by a pin 57 carried by a lever 55 so that releasing movement of the inside handle causes rotation of the lever 55 and this lever has a face which abuts the slide and its movement thus causes movement of the slide to the right to release the latch bolts. The lever 55 carries a second pin 56 which engages in a crank slot 58 in a lever 51 which engages a cranked portion 49 of the lever 36 and the arrangement is such that when the internal handle is moved to a locking position the lever 51 is pivoted via the levers 60 and 55 to raise the lever 36 vertically so that its lower arm is out of engagement with the lug 38. The lower arm of the lever 36 is provided with a lug 40 which is normally symmetrically disposed relative to the rollers 27 and 28 and the latch bolt pins 9 and 10; when the lever is in the vertically shifted position if the door is slammed without pivoting the lever handle 43 the roller 27 will engage the lug 40 and cause the movement of the lever 36 to its normal position in which the lower end portion is in engagement with the lug 38.
