In a vertically adjustable bed, a mattress frame 2 is carried on bell-crank levers 7, 8, which are angularly adjusted by hydraulic ram 22, acting between stationary frame member 21 and telescopically adjustable connecting rod 10a, b. To vary the inclination of frame 2, rods 10a are moved longitudinally in tubes 10b and retained, in the desired position of adjustment, by spring-urged pins (13) entering blind holes (11) in the rods. Frame 2 is constrained to move vertically by the engagement of pivoted slide bars 28 in vertical guides 29 fixed to the base frame 1. A manually operable reciprocating pump 23 is provided for actuating ram 22.
