Abstract

1410034 Adjustable beds H S WRIGHT 20 Sept 1972 [9 Nov 1971] 43548/72 Heading A4J A hospital bed comprises a mattress frame 7 supported on a wheeled bogie 1 by a sub-frame comprising a pivoted X-linkage 6, 8 which is operable by a hydraulic pump 2 and control linkage 4 to vary the height of the mattress frame 7, and includes means for additionally tilting the mattress frame 7, the tilting means comprising a member 17 pivoted intermediate its ends to the X-linkage 6, 8 and slidably connected at its upper end to the mattress frame 7. The sliding connection comprises a plate 33 carried by the tilting member 17 and having a protruding edge slidably engaged in a slot 35 in a bracket 34 fixed to the mattress frame 7. The lower ends of a pair of parallel tilting members 7 carry between them a shaft 22 provided with a pair of pinions 23, 24 each engaged with an associated arcuate rack 20 fixed to the bogie 1. A further pinion 25 on the shaft 25 has teeth engaged in holes 29 in a pair of spring strips 27, 28 to lock the members 17 against rotation. When it is desired to adjust the inclination a cam 30 is rotated by an operating cable 31 and pull ring 32 to move the strips 27, 28 apart to free the member 17 for pivoting. The mattress frame 7 supports a back-rest section 16 pivoted to the frame 7, at 6a, and seat 14 and leg support 14, 15 sections pivoted together, at 13a. A contour control link 9 is pivoted to the sections 14, 15 at 13a and has a lower end 39 which may slide freely between plates 37 secured to an end of one member 8 of the X-linkage when the bed contour is not to be adjusted. The plates 37 carry a pin 38 which may be engaged in a notch 40 in the link 9 when it is desired to adjust the bed contour. The link 9 may be pivoted against a spring-bias to a position for engaging the pin 38 by displacement of a control rod 43 carrying a pin for engaging the link 9.
