Abstract
1,076,604. Photo-electric flaw detection. VSESOJUSNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUTE GOZNAKA. June 30, 1964, No. 18082/64. Heading G1A. Sheets of paper 2 are inspected by beams of light which are scanned across each side of the paper by mirror drums 16, 16a co-operating with photo-multipliers 22, 22a receiving light reflected from the sheets. Cylindrical lenses 19, 19a and 20, 20a are provided to focus the scanning and reflected beams respectively. A further photomultiplier 25 detects flaws that show up as a variation in the intensity of transmitted light. The width of scan is limited to the width of the sheets 2 by mirror masks 18, 18a which, when the scanning beam is outside these limits, reflects the beam to photo-multipliers 23, 23a to produce compensating signals for addition to the output of photo-multipliers 22, 22a to produce a steady D. C. level. The outputs of the photo-multipliers 22, 22a and 25 are analysed with regard to the amplitude of short duration variation signals and the dimensions of signals representing flaws along and across the sheet. The permissable amount of different types of flaw may be different. When a flaw is detected, a pulse is fed to a delay circuit which energizes reject means when the defective sheet has reached a reject station. The sensitization of the apparatus to detect flaws and the passage of a reject pulse through the delay circuit is controlled by sources of infrared radiation 29, 30 co-operating with photo-diodes 27, 28 to detect the passing sheets. The photo-multipliers are insensitive to infrared.
