Abstract
1,063,479. Inspecting containers photo-electrically. OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc. Nov. 5, 1963 [Oct. 21, 1963], No. 43563/63. Addition to 1,061,298. Heading G1A. Defects in the bottom of transparent containers are detected by focusing at least one beam of radiant energy on to the bottom of the container, rotating the container, and providing a plurality of axially spaced distinct radiant energy paths so that a defect reflects radiant energy along at least one such path to detector means. Containers C, Fig. 1, are moved to an inspection station 12 where they are raised and rotated by a vacuum pad 13 to a position where the bottom is illuminated by upwardly directed light beams L 1 , L 2 , L 3 , L 4 . Defects such as bottom checks reflect light upwardly to a detector unit 25, which comprises collimating slots 27, Fig. 9, which diverge from the focal point of beams L 1 , L 2 , L 3 , L 4 , and an array of parallelly connected photovoltaic cells 29. An output from the detector unit 25 may energize a reject solenoid, after a delay if necessary.
