Abstract
1,149,518. Detecting flaws photo-electrically. FELDMœHLE A.G. Nov.21, 1966 [Nov. 20, 1965], No.52114/66. Heading G1A. [Also in Division G2] Products in web or sheet form are tested and sorted by scanning a spot of light across the web and detecting the light transmitted or reflected by the product using light conducting fibre bundles arranged over the whole width of the product. Light from a source 1 is scanned across the web 5 by a mirror drum 3, the light being focused to a moving point of light by the lens 6. The reflected light is collected by fibre optic bundles 9, 10 and fed to a photo-multiplier 12. The output ends of the fibre optic bundles are shaped to match the sensitive area of the photo-multiplier, and lenses may be provided at either end of the bundles. The fibre optic bundles may be arranged to receive (a) diffusely reflected light to detect discolorations (b) specularly reflected light to detect folds (c) directly transmitted light to detect holes (d) diffusely transmitted light to detect included foreign bodies. These fibre optic bundles may co-operate with different photo-multipliers, or (a), (b) and (d) may co-operate with the same photo-multiplier since they all respond to a flaw by a reduction of light intensity.
