Abstract

898,828. Drilling. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 16, 1960 [June 26, 1959], No. 22011/59. Class 83 (3). [Also in Groups XIX, XXIII and XL (b)] A method of detecting and locating internal flaws in transparent sheet material 2 comprises directing light from a source 5 on to an edge of the material and so causing any internal flaws F to be illuminated by internally reflected light and their positions to be marked by the presence of relatively bright areas on the surface of the material. A continuous glass sheet 2 is fed over rollers 1 and passes between a pair of tubular incandescent lamps 5 each arranged to focus an image of its filament on the edge of the sheet 2. If there is an internal flaw in the glass as at F a relatively bright spot formed by internally reflected light will appear on the surface of the sheet as the flaw passes between the lamps 5. The bright spot is detected by a photo-sensitive device 10 which is one of a number arranged to cover the width of the sheet. The output signal is passed to an amplifier and a delay device and can be used to operate a drill to drill out the flaw. If desired a warning can be given when a flaw has been detected and a counter may register the total number of flaws. The apparatus may also be used for examining single sheets of glass which are then directed into one or other of two reception channels depending upon the presence or absence of flaws. In addition to the edge illumination a light projector may be located on one side of the sheet and arranged to project light through the sheet from one face to the other. This will indicate surface faults if used with a photo-sensitive device as described above. In this case the two types of fault may be indicated differently. In a modification the array of photo-sensitive devices is replaced by a rotatable drum mounted above the conveyer with its axis extending in the direction of movement thereof. The drum carries on its periphery a system of mirrors so that as it rotates a single photo-sensitive device scans the whole width of the sheet of glass.
