Abstract
In a vacuum coating plant having electrically tested evaporation filaments, a cold trap constituted by a metal coolant container has electrical connections whereby condensed evaporators can be removed by passing a heating electrical current through the container. The cold trap container may consist of a metal cylinder (1), Fig.1 (not shown) or is a coiled copper tube 9 Refrigerated coolant is passed through coil 9 during normal working, shut-off valves (not shown) in the inlet <PICT:1076428/C6-C7/1> and outlet ducts being closed during defrosting. In a modification inlet 10 and outlet 11 are connected to earth and the electrical supply is connected to the mid point of coil 9. Coil 9 may be cooled by liquid nitrogen or carbon dioxide supplied from a dewar flask, outlet 11 being left open to atmosphere.
