Abstract

Urea derivatives are prepared by reacting an amino-compound (as defined below) with carbon oxysulphide at a temperature above 60 DEG C. or, if below 60 DEG C., at a temperature at which the compound is molten, so as to form the corresponding desired urea. "Amino-compound" is defined as a compound containing a reactive hydrogen atom joined to a nitrogen atom, but does not include compounds which are already ureas. Specified amino-compounds are aromatic and aliphatic amines, including polyamines, amino-acids, hydrazines and hydroxylamine. In some cases the product is a cyclic urea.ALSO:Polyureas are obtained by reacting longchained aliphatic or aromatic amines, containing at least 2 amino groups and having more than 3 carbon atoms between the amino groups, with carbon oxysulphide at a temperature above 60 DEG C. or, if below 60 DEG C., at a temperature at which the amine is molten.
