Abstract

Glycol ether amines of the formula:- <FORM:0934636/IV(a)/1> wherein R is a C1-8 alkyl or cycloalkyl group, R1, R2 and R3 are each C2-4 alkylene groups, x is 0 or 1, y is 0 or 1, m is 1, 2 or 3 and Z is hydrogen or a C1-8 aliphatic group, are prepared by passing over a nickel or cobalt hydrogenation/dehydrogenation catalyst at a temperature of between 150 and 250 DEG C. a vaporized mixture comprising hydrogen, a glycol ether of the formula: RO-(R1O)x-(R2O)y-R3OH, and an amino compound which may be ammonia, a C1-8 primary aliphatic amine, a secondary aliphatic amine having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms in each of the groups attached to the nitrogen atom, or an amine of the formula:- <FORM:0934636/IV(a)/2> where p is 1 or 2. Preferably any unreacted glycol ether is recovered from the reaction mixture and recycled into the vaporized starting mixture.
