In a mixing apparatus the ratio of water to particulate material is maintained constant, despite variations in the initial water content of the material, by controlling the supply of both water and particulate material in accordance with variations in the specific weight of the latter. In the drawing accompanying Provisional Specification the weight of sand on belt 3 is sensed by hydraulic device 18 which controls the setting of a potentiometer 20. The potentiometer controls an actuator 24 coupled to a potentiometer 22 which varies the speed of a variable speed, constant torque motor 4 by way of a control unit. The initial speed of motor 4, and hence of belt 3 is controlled by potentiometer 30. Potentiometer 20 also controls actuators 14, 15 to vary the setting of a water supply valve 9 by way of motor 13, the initial setting being determined by potentiometer 29. The rate of supply of sand may be controlled by means of motor 31, adjusting gate 2, instead of by motor 4. In a modification a potentiometer is set by way of a mechanical linkage in accordance with the specific weight of the sand and the potentiometer output is supplied to an actuator which controls a further potentiometer. The latter is connected in control circuits for the belt drive motor and the water supply control motor.
