Abstract
1,071,741. Packaging cigarettes and like articles. MOLINS ORGANISATION Ltd., and D. W. MOLINS. Jan. 1, 1964 [Jan. 2, 1963], No. 228/63. Heading B8C. An apparatus for filling boxes or trays with cigarettes, multiple filter plugs therefor or like articles comprises a guide, which during filling of a box extends to the bottom thereof, and means for producing relative motion between the guide and the box so that an article-engaging face of the guide and an end wall of the box define an article-receiving space whose length increases during the filling operation. A feeding system F, also duplicated on the left but not shown, is as described in Specification 1,071,742. The articles are conveyed by endless belts 2, 2a to positions above a box 21 which is moved from left to right by pushers 23 on an endless chain 22. The guide comprises an endless belt 27 which is driven in the direction shown and according to the invention pushes the articles already received by the box downwards by frictional engagement to pack them more closely and prevent bunching. In operation the belt 27 is raised to the chain line position on approach of the rear end of box 21, the rate of raising being such that a minimum clearance is maintained between the upper edge of the box and the ascending run of belt 27. The feed of articles from belt 2a is thereby stopped and accumulation of articles on this belt is prevented by the timed operation of a pause device (5) of the lefthand feeding system (F). The feed of articles from belt 2 continues until or just after belt 27 has reached its upper position and is halted by movement of a plate 26 to the left and operation of pause device 5 of the right-hand system F. Counters, e.g. using photo-electric sensing means, may be utilized to control the movements of pause device 5 and other movable parts such as belt 27, plate 26 and belt 22, or an indirect control for parts 22, 26, 27 may be provided via sensing devices at the discharge ends of belts 2, 2a.
