Abstract
107,165. Craig, A. M. Dec. 29, 1916. Casting-machines; moulds; castings, extracting.-Castings, particularly steel ingots, are compressed in moulds having sections sliding freely one upon another. The bottom of the mould is conveniently formed by the top of a truck 12, Figs. 1 and 2, running on rails which lead through a frame 10 having an abutment 17. Side abutments or guides 15, 16 are formed on the truck. Pressure is applied by a ram 19 vertically adjustable in the frame by a ram 18<a>. Pressure may be applied obliquely so that one of the side guides may be dispensed with. For circular ingots, the moulds may be shaped as shown in Figs. 7 or 14. A core 30, Fig. 7, may be suspended in the mould which is flanged at the top to retain the casting during the withdrawal of the core. The mould may be in sections vertically each with its own ram. Initial pressure is applied to the sections successively commencing at the bottom, and a final heavier pressure is applied to all the sections simultaneously. The core may be centred by a projection from the top of the truck or may be suspended from a yoke by a screw which also serves for extraction. Additional pressure may be applied to the top of the metal by a plunger which is annular in form when a core is employed.
