To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, FRANK B. BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing, in Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Removing Articles from Forging Dies or the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to the art of forming metal articles, and more particularly to heavy articles, such as can wheels and the like, pressed or otherwise formed in the molds.
The invention has for its object broadly the facilitating of the removing of the metal articles, after forming, from the molds in which they have received their shape. While the invention has more particular reference, particularly in the forms selected ,for illustration to the manufacture of forged car wheel blanks, it will be readily manifest'that it has other and more general application.
In the pressing of car wheels, which is selected as an example of a valuable use of the invention, the procedure is as follows: A short ingot block is provided, this block is upset and a hole is punched in its center and the block is then dropped upon a forming die in the center of which is provided an upwardly projecting mandrel. A top forming die is then brought down with sufficient pressure to form the hub and shape the car wheel. I have found that this forging of the blank around the mandrel causes it to grip the mandrel tightly and my invention in this connection is employed to free the whole or partly formed car wheel or article from the mandrel and permit it to be gripped by the tongs and removed.
The invention has for an important object the provision of simple and effective means for freeing the formed article from the mold in or about which it has been formed.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for accomplishing this re sult, which will be wholly automatic in its action and which will not require the provision of complicated or delicate parts likely to require frequent adjustment, repair or replacement. In this'connection it is to be noted that the invention is usable with the forging or pressing of heavy articles in connection with presses acting with great force. 1
Another important object of the invention is the provision of means for facilitating" removing of the formed articles from the molds in which they have'been formed by a press, without requiring that the press be idle during the article removing operation. I
Another important object of the invention is the provision of such a construction having these and other advantages, which will not require manipulation by attendants or operators or other attention during the operations of the apparatus of which it" forms a part.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which taken in connection with the accompanying drawings discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown on the drawing a press bed l1 movable in any suitable or usual fashion on press bed tracks 12/ so thatit moves back and forth beneath the operative parts of a press of any preferred character. 1
Since the details of this press construction form no part of my present invention'I have merely shown on the drawing the four uprights or supports 13 carrying the operative parts.
The pressbed is provided with aplurality of operating stations, tour in the presentthe present invention, it being sufiicient to say that at these stations preliminary formations are given to the blankas upset-ting andpunching it, etc. The mold located at the station 17 is indicated byreference character18 and this mold is shown in Figs. 4: to 8. It comprises a body 21 carrying, preterably, a mandrel. 22 about which the car wheel iiswholly. or partly formed, it being understood that the co-operatin. die or mold (not shown on the drawing) is provided in the press and is forced down to give formationto the article. As has been stated,- this formation of the article about the mandrel causes it to grip the mandrel tightly and notwithstanding the usual tapering. form given. these mandrels ditliculty has been, experienced in removing thewholly or partly formedcar wheel. I provide adjacent opposite sides of the. mold. recesses. 231extending into the upper mold face and to receive the head-24 of litters .-or ejectors as shown in Fig. 7, filler blocks 20 being provided in the recess behind the heads of the. litters. An. opening 25 extendsdown vfrom each recess 23 into a slot .26, which extends through. the mold and has a tapered.;opening 27atthe side of the mold adjacenttheend of the press .bed or. table 11.-
Each slot 26 as formed extends through the. side or. themold and isclosedat the side by a filler block 28 having a.-fiange29 seated in a recess 31 in the portion. beneath the slot and. held in place at the top by a set screw 33engaging threads formed partly in the mold body and partly in the filler block and provided. after the filler block-hasbeen. arranged inassembled position. In the present instance this means consists of apair oflwedges 37; fixed. in holders 38 mounted in a support 89 held upon theend oi the bed support 12. This lifting meansis wholly automatic in its action and the lifting operationv occurs without interruption to the workof the press and while the bedis arranged to permit the press to perform other operations upon a succeeding.- blanlr-.-;
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantageswill beundenstood from. the foregoing description, and *it will be apparent that various changesma-y be made in the form, construction and arrangementofthe parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention,.
or sacrificing all of itsmaterial advantages, the. form hereinbefore. described being mere ly a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:

10. In an apparatus of the general character described, the combination of a mold, a press bed movable laterally, and means rendered operable by movement of said press bed for freeing articles formed by said mold.
11. In an apparatus of the general character described, the combination of a press bed having a plurality of operative stations, and mounted for sidewise movement, a mold carried by said bed, and means 10- cated and adjacent to and operable through the movement of the press bed for freeing articles pressed in said mold.
12. In an apparatus of the general character described, the combination of a press bed, a mold on said press bed and having a liftable bottom, and means insertible beneath said bottom in the movement of said press bed for lifting said bottom above said press bed to free articles formed by the mold.
13. In an apparatus of the general character described, the combination of a reciprocating press bed, a mold carried by said press fixed means located over the end of the bed at the end of the travel of said end for lifting and freeing articles formed by said mold.
14. In an apparatus of the general character described, the combination of a reciprocating press bed, a mold carried thereby, Wedge members located in fixed position at an end of the travel of said press bed and in position to extend over the press bed and to engage in said mold to lift and free articles formed by said mold.
